Community College
Universities are not the only option for those of you
graduating from high school. A lot of students decide
to go to junior college because it’s closer to home,
you can get a job, and it costs less than a 4-year
college. Afterwards you can transfer to a 4-year
school. Here is some info on local community colleges
that you can apply to.

Armed Forces
Another option is joining the military. They pay you
for your service, and you learn work
and leadership skills. You can join the Navy, Army,
Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard.
Most branches of the military require that you
complete the ASVAB exam to see if you meet
the basic entry requirements. You can talk with local
recruiters at the Capitola Recruiting
Station, 464-0461.
Public Service
If taking orders and dodging machine gun fire isn’t
your thing, you can join a group like Peace Corps or
Americorps. Peace Corps is an organization that helps
build communities worldwide. They provide
travel to many different countries and give you a
small living allowance. When you return you receive a
stipend. Americorps is a similar program based within
the United States. You work in local communities and
are paid for your work. The typical Americorps duty is
only 2 years. Check out their websites:

Employment
Getting a job right away may be a better option for
some of you. You can put in applications at local
businesses or companies that are always hiring. Here
are some places that can help you make
that money. Try cruising the local classified ads a
few times. You can also try getting a job through an
employment agency or local work center, such as Career
Works, 763-8700, or Central Coast Employment Services,
626-4385.
