Major Decisions

Senior year in high school is a year when many
decisions have to be made. Two of the most important
decisions students make are if they are going to go to
a college or to a university, and what career they
will try to pursue.
We were interested in knowing what seniors wanted to
do with their lives. Therefore, we decided to do a
survey. The teens in the survey were asked two
questions: Are you going to a university or community
college, and what major do you want to pursue? We
asked a total of 86 senior students to help us with
this survey.
Being realistic about out future and having goals will
help us accomplish our dreams as students
After the survey was completed, we organized every
major according to the field of study that it
corresponded to. Social Science is the most popular
field of study that seniors are interested in. Some
examples of the Social Science fields are psychology,
criminal justice, education, and politics. The least
popular field of study was business, such as
accounting and business administration. Six percent of
the teens that participated in the survey were
undecided about their career goals.
According to our survey, 94% of the participants said
that they are interested in going to a university.
Last year there were a total of 385 high school
graduates from Watsonville High School. From those 385
students only 35 went to UCs, CSUs, and private
universities. The remaining 350 students went to
community colleges, private institutions, or the
military. We hope this year more students will work
hard and try to accomplish their goals of going to a
university and pursuing higher education.
Being realistic about our future and having goals will
help us accomplish our dreams as students. It seems
like everyone wants to have a nice home, a new car,
and of course, a lot of money. It is possible, but in
order to have this we need to pursue a higher level of
education that is beyond high school. This means
going to a university or college. Those who don’t
pursue a higher level of education will face fewer
opportunities in the work force.
