PSI CENTRAL COAST PROJECT
Population Services International (PSI) is an international health
organization, with a Central Coast branch located in Watsonville,
California. What do we do at PSI? We learn about the fundamentals
of journalism, what it means to represent the voice of teen culture
and we find out how our voices can impact the larger community.
Oh yeah, and we talk about sex-related stuff.
PSI's Central Coast Project was launched in 1999 to address high
rates of teen pregnancies in local communities of Santa Cruz and
Monterey counties. We've been working with local teens to get the word out
about the consequences of sex, the importance of protection and the
value of making informed choices. While we know that half of high
school age students are having sex, we also know that half are not
having sex.
At PSI we want to make sure that whether you are sexually active, are
practicing abstinence, or are thinking about having sex, you know what
it means to be safe, to be protected and to be smart. In addition to
ShoutOut, we also create cool media pieces for radio and print,
facilitate parent workshops, conduct teen-to-teen workshops and
provide teens with confidential and convenient access to condoms.
